Senior US senators have filed a resolution in the country’s senate that calls for equipping Syria’s armed groups with weapons.
On Wednesday, Republican Senator John McCain and four other senators including Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman, presented the non-binding resolution, which urges the White House to provide the Syrian opposition with “weapons and other material support”.
The senators are critical of a six-point peace plan proposed by United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan as it does not call on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
The lawmakers urged US President Barack Obama to take a leadership role over the situation in Syria.
On Sunday, Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on the need to send "non-lethal" aid including communications equipment to Syrian armed rebels.
On Tuesday, Damascus accepted Kofi Annan’s peace plan to end the unrest in Syria.
The peace plan includes a ceasefire, access for humanitarian aid agencies as well as political dialog between Damascus and the opposition.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.
The West and the Syrian opposition blame Damascus for the year-long turmoil, but the government says “terrorists” are responsible for the unrest, which it says is being orchestrated from abroad.
The Syrian president said on February 20 that “some foreign countries” are fueling the turmoil in Syria by supporting and funding “armed terrorist groups fighting against the government.”

There is a conflict of Interest with Syrian regime so no country will arm Syrian resistance. Syrian regime , Hezbollah and Iranian regime are helping NATO in Libyan invasion.
Iran is helping USA in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Hezbollah is guarding the Israeli border to prevent any attack on Israel. Such a strong relationship in these country will act as a guarantee for the Syrian regime from any foreign intervention.
On top the Russian and Iranian regime plus Hezbollah are directly helping the Syrian regime. The problem is the internet from where the whole world knows the Syrian regime slaughter . These countries are embarrassed. Arab leaders are embarrassed too. So all of them need to show some kind of positive move towards Syrian resistance.
They are doing it by mouth and buying time for Assad. Any one with even short term memory may recall that within 7 days of the "fake" Libyan uprising the Arab League "suspended" Libya!! then within 15 days they call on UN against Libya and within 2 months NATO , Iran ? Hezbollah are in Libya bombing!!
Now let us see what happened in Syria.....
The uprising is over a Year now!! on 16 Nov 2011 after a long delay the news headline was "Syria To Be Suspended From Arab League" well after that I heard that they are suspended!
Arab league then send "Observers" after many months of slaughters. And now UN is sending a "peace mission" The one who see this without prejudice can easily see the double slandered the Arab League and UN.
All they have to do is make any move against this butcher so he stop the artillery shells on civilians. They cant do it because they are on the same boat. More over Russia , Iran and Hezbollah are there to supply arms to the regime. They wont arm the resistance because that will exhilarate the inevitable fall of Assad. It was my understanding from the very beginning of the Syrian revolution.
But Assad will fall inshallah and let the Syrian people do it by themselves. It is customary to go through UN to solve any problem and any one acting on their own will be considered as a terrorist. But if they do it in favor of Assad then it is ok. The Syrian resistance is growing and never seen such large army defection in present history.
