"When I made my report I deliberately refrained from mentioning that the pilot was alive and safe and that we had the remnants of the plane. We did this deliberately, because had we given out the whole story, the Americans would have thought up another version."

Gary Power's airplane was supposed to be flying beside the Soviet border,, following a line of signal becons, while looking deep into Russian airspace.
What happened:
The Russians got tired of USA /U2 flights,, looking over the border into their country, so the Russians set up a line of false guidence beacons,, which lured Powers into Russian airspace,, where he was shot down, causing the international incident.

I was told this, 30 years ago,, by an old man,, who was involved in US Military intelligence, during this operation.
