Russian Intelligence Chief Dies While Swimming
Updated: Saturday, 28 Aug 2010, 4:00 PM EDT
(NewsCore) - The deputy head of Russia's powerful military intelligence agency died mysteriously in a swimming accident, Russian media reported Saturday.
"Several days ago, General Yuri Ivanov died while swimming," official news agency RIA Novosti quoted a military source as saying.
The report did not give any further details on the circumstances of the death, or the location.
Ivanov was deputy head of the GRU, the overseas intelligence gathering arm of the Russian military.
Daily Kommersant reported that the 52-year-old had died "tragically," wording that was repeated in an obituary in defense ministry newspaper Red Star, which also failed to provide any details.
During the Soviet era the GRU was considered a rival to the KGB, the secret service, now known as the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).

Some sources say in Turkey, others say in Syria.
Mossad is trying to claim responsibility for Ivanovs death,
but not very convincingly.

"The body of one of Russia’s top spies has washed up on the Turkish coast after he disappeared close to a sensitive Russian naval facility in neighbouring Syria."

"Maj. Gen. Yuri Ivanov, deputy head of Russian intelligence service known as GRU, died in Syria recently. Speculation is rampant that he was assassinated. He had been staying in the northwestern Syrian resort of Tartous when he disappeared, with his body later hauled in by Turkish fishermen."
I guess, an obduction will shed more light on the causes of Mr
Ivanovs death.
Regarding the age of Mr Ivanov, he could easily have died a natural
death, for example he could have drowned due to a heart attack
while he was taking a swim in the Mediterranean sea.

mossad? yawn....
How does a guy of his rank get to drown then? no escort or bodyguards?
or it could have been payback for this...

I'm taking back my last supposition, and appologize to susie.
It was premature to suppose sinister intentions.

Unlikely to be natural death.
If this had happened in New Zealand anywhere else except in a state run hospital the state would carry out an autopsy to find cause just in case it was murder.
In this the STATE doesn't trust anyone so why should we.
