Iran launches advanced Jamaran destroyer
Fri, 19 Feb 2010 09:36:50 GMT
Iran's Navy on Friday took the delivery of the first indigenously designed and developed guided missile destroyer Jamaran in the presence of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The Mowdge Class vessel has a displacement of around 1,420 tonnes and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities.
Jamaran, a multi-mission destroyer, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles.
It has a top speed of up to 30 knots and has a helipad. It also features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface systems.
The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons. The destroyer's launch marks a major technological leap for Iran's naval industries.
More ships in its class are under construction.

It's a modification of an ancient British corvette design from the 1960's. It's not even a proper 'destroyer' as by weight it is no more than a corvette. The 'highly advanced' anti-aircraft system consists of 35 mm anti aircraft guns, and the anti surface weapons are a 76 mm gun.
On the other hand the Chinese C-802/803 missiles it carries are good quality weapons, with great accuracy and very hard to detect and counter.
Good on Iran, it's a step forward, but realistically Iran would be better served spending their money on other weapons that aren't going to be cannon fodder.

From what I remember the AA guns are 40 mm not 35mm, but that doesn't detract from the fact that they have an unclassified anti-air SAM on board this destroyer. There is simply zero information on it. But please, feel free to prove me wrong.

That was on the mockup, but they probably didn't decide on what system to put in and tat's why the ship for the moment has no SAM system aboard. I'm guessing you used a source that was used in wikipedia as it mentions 40 mm AA guns and an unidentified SAM system. Problem is that wikipedia has TWO ships that are meant to be this 'Jamaran'. One is the one like you describe, and on wikipedia it is called 'Jamaran class'. There is also the 'Moudge Class', the first of which is called 'Jamaran' as well and which has systems that correspond to what I said.
Seems that there are no sensible sources yet about this ship, so I hold my hand up and say that there's too little to know much about it, though by displacement and the fact that Iran has never built a ship of this scale before, I'd say that it's a good missile ship, but is too vulnerable to survive long, though really if it say fired its missiles and sun a Ticonderoga or Arleigh Burke, or damaged a carrier, then the Iranians would trade the loss of the vessel for such a prize.

and all this fleet of destroyers will be at the bottom of the sea unfortunately.
I hope the Iranians don't think they have manufactured some form of deterrent there.

So we come back to the start and admit: we don't know much about this ship.
No need to speculate that it has already sunk to the bottom of the persian gulf.

One of the problems of constructing large ships, eventually they have to be assembled out in the open:

climate. It would be a lot better to put one of the missile launchers onto a rubber and wood, fast attack boat. Cheap, expendable, and extremely hard to get a lock on or detect. 50 of these would be much more of a threat to a US battlegroup in the Gulf than 2 or 3 big ships.
