British solider killed in explosion in southern Afghanistan

A British soldier has died from wounds received as a result of an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The soldier, from 36 Engineer Regiment, had been serving as part of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Task Force, at the time of his death.

The MoD said he was engaged in IED clearance operations to the north-east of Sangin district centre in Hlemand province when he was caught in the explosion on Monday afternoon.

Paying tribute to the unnamed soldier, spokesman for Task Force Helmand Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield said: "He was one of that unique breed who go out again and again to confront the dangers of IEDs, determined to save lives. His indomitable courage will not be forgotten."

The soldier's next of kin have been informed, the MoD said, adding the death had not been associated with Operation Moshtarak, the massive Nato offensive currently taking place in southern Helmand.
