Iraq: Bomb attack targets police in Mosul

Baghdad, 16 Feb. (AKI) - Two people were killed when a car bomb exploded outside a police crime laboratory in northern Iraq on Tuesday, Iraqi authorities said. The bombing was the latest in a string of attacks against security forces in Mosul, widely considered an insurgent stronghold.

According to the news agency Voices of Iraq, at least five police officers were also injured when the car bomb exploded outside a side entrance to the laboratory in Mosul, northwest of Baghdad.

The explosion destroyed concrete blast walls and caused minor damage to the building, a local official said.

Tuesday's attack follows a suicide bombing last month that destroyed the Baghdad's main crime lab and left at least 22 dead.

“The booby-trapped car went off at 7:30 a.m. today near the criminal evidence department in Ninewa’s Dawrat al-Hamam area, in eastern Mosul, killing a police officer of the rank of captain and a traffic policeman, " a source told Voices of Iraq.

“The wounded included a police colonel and a major,” the report said.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, is 400 kilometres north of Baghdad.
