Massacres follow failed U.S.-aided Uganda mission: report
Saturday, February 7, 2009; 1:17 AM
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. military helped plan and finance a recent attack on a Ugandan rebel group which went awry, with fleeing fighters conducting a series of massacres that killed up to 900 civilians, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
The Uganda-led operation targeted the brutal rebel group called Lord's Resistance Army, which had been hiding in a Congolese national park. The rebel leaders escaped and small group of fighters rampaged through towns in northeastern Congo, hacking, burning, shooting and clubbing civilians to death, the newspaper said.
The U.S. involvement was its first helping plan such a specific military offensive with Uganda, the Times said, citing senior U.S. military officials. The officials said a team of 17 advisers and analysts from the Pentagon's new Africa Command worked with Ugandan officers, providing satellite phones, intelligence and $1 million in fuel.
No U.S. forces were involved in ground fighting, the Times said, adding that human rights advocates and villagers said the Ugandan and Congolese troops did little to protect villagers from the attackers.
U.S. officials admitted that villagers were left unprotected.
"We provided insights and alternatives for them to consider, but their choices were their choices," the newspaper quoted a U.S. military official who was briefed on the operation as saying, in reference to the African ground forces. "In the end, it was not our operation," the U.S. official said.
A Ugandan military spokesman declined to discuss the U.S. involvement, saying only "There was no way to prevent these massacres."
The rebel group remains at large, moving through villages, torch them and killing civilians, the Times said. Witnesses said they have also kidnapped hundreds of children to enslave them into their forces, it said.

US EU meddling in Africa has killed millions starting from slavery to the belgian congo and now in chad, sudan, somalia and uganda. Since the US has created the africa command you will see much more mass killings as the US moves to grab more African resources.
US/EU war criminals who have thousands of deaths on their hands whine about China making deals with Africa while the US/UK white boys just want to steal African resources while Africans are armed to fight each other For democracy of course.

This quote is where the truth lies. What goodies are in that territory, the national park? What resources?
Stated simply, the governments of the US/UK/IS, in service to the multinationals/extractive industries etc, fund and provide training and weaponry to "rebel groups"(Rwanda,Uganda,Sudan etc) for the sake of overthrowing uncooperative governments or establishing "independent states" wherever highly valued resources lie.
Western governments, or sometimes the corporations themselves, will support and arm both sides of a contrived conflict. These conflicts become the mechanism by which people can be displaced from resource-rich lands. One "rebel group" launches an attack, and then the government troops counterattack. The people then flee for their lives.
That is what the above article is actually describing.
The Western public is fed a "civil war" or "ethnic strife" type of narrative to obscure the truth. The best example of this is the "Tutsi genocide in Rwanda" narrative. Kagame and the Rwandan Patriotic Front were trained at Fort Leavenworth in the US. They killed many many thousands of people when they invaded from Ugandan territory. Then there is retaliation from Rwandans against these invaders. This process occurs over a number of years.
The public is then fed the simplistic "Hutu genocide against Tutsis" narrative, said to have occured in a few months. The "Tutsi holocaust" then becomes the political hammer used to crush any oppostion or criticism of the Kagame government. Sound familiar? The "genocide" narrative also serves as a cover for launching military operations in neighboring countries under the pretense of "hunting for genocidaires". The Tutsi's are often described as "the Jews of Africa."
This process is being repeated right now in Darfur. The "genocide in Darfur" PR campaign hopes for the same result. All of the fundamentals are the same as the Rwanda PR campaign. Instead of "Hutus genociding Tutsis" we have "Arabs genociding Blacks." They hope to get rid of the Bashir government and kick out the Chinese. The "rebel groups" in Darfur(JEM, SLA) have openly declared their desire to have Western oil companiese replace the Chinese presence. Notice how just prior to the Olympics the Chinese are accused of "supporting genocide in Darfur" as per Mr. Speilberg & Co. There was recently an article here which stated the rebels in Darfur are being supported by Israel as well.
